Head coach Les Lawton is pleased to announce Julie Chu, a highly respected player and captain with Team USA, has joined the staff of the Concordia Stingers women’s hockey program.
Chu, 32, is an assistant coach with responsibilities for skill development, special teams and video.
“She’s definitely a big asset to our program and a role model for our athletes,” Lawton said. “She’s been the face of women’s hockey in the U.S. for more than 10 years. She’s very well connected in the hockey world. She’ll be a big help on the recruitment side as well.
“She’s an intelligent determined player. She was always ahead of everyone else. As a captain at that level, she’s also demonstrated exceptional leadership skills.”
The native of Fairfield, Conn. played for the U.S. in the 2002, 2006, 2010 and 2014 Winter Olympics, winning three silver medals and a bronze. She was the American flag bearer at the closing ceremonies of the 2014 Sochi Olympics.
She’s also won five gold medals and four silvers at World Championships.
Chu attended Harvard University from 2002 through 2007 when she graduated with a concentration in psychology. During her time at Harvard, Chu became the all-time leading scorer in NCAA history and was also the team captain.
Her coaching career began in 2007 when she became an assistant coach for the University of Minnesota Duluth and helped the Bulldogs win the NCAA championship. In 2010, she joined the Union College women's hockey coaching staff, also serving as assistant coach. She stepped down after the 2012–2013 season to prepare for the 2014 Winter Olympics.
Chu currently plays for the Montreal Stars of the Canadian Women’s Hockey League and is still active in international hockey.
