Rugby women set for playoff with McGill

The Concordia Stingers women's rugby team will attempt to break a 20-game winless streak versus the McGill Martlets when the teams meet in a QSSF semifinal game tomorrow at 2 p.m. at Macdonald College in Ste. Anne de Bellevue.

Since a 12-8 victory on Nov. 8, 1998 in the QSSF championship game, the Stingers have amassed a record of 0-19-1.

While there have been some lopsided games over the years, Concordia has been very competitive this season. McGill won 15-0 on Oct. 11 and 13-5 last Sunday.

"We match up pretty well," says Stingers' head coach Graeme McGravie. "The scrums are 50-50. They've had the better of us in the line-outs. And the backs are evenly matched

"Both games have been some of the best rugby I've seen in a few years. "

McGravie believes his Stingers will be ready tomorrow.

"We have to take advantage of what McGill gives us," he says. "They keep giving us chances and we don't execute. We need big games from Ali Olshefsky. She needs to win us more balls in the line-outs. And we need a big game from Jen Rosenbaum. She has to get the backs going."

Concordia finished the regular season in third place with a 3-2 record, while McGill posted a 4-1 record and finished second. The winner of the game will advance to the Quebec championship versus the winner of the Ottawa Gee-Gees-Laval Rouge et Or semifinal.
