Dominating soccer season leads to six all-star honours

The Concordia Stingers placed six athletes on the 2018 RSEQ men’s indoor soccer all-star teams announced by the conference on Thursday.

It’s an exceptional accomplishment for the Stingers who finished in first place in the league with a 5-1-1 win-loss-tie record. The conference introduced its competitive indoor league in 2008. From the inaugural season through to 2017, the total number of all-star honours earned was six. This season the Stingers have matched that total.

There are five players on the first all-star team: goalkeeper Karl Gouabe, defender Philippe Audy, forward Simon Malaborsa, and mid-fielders Jorgen Ulloa-Aguilar and Yacine Ait Slimane.

Elias Barutciski, also a mid-fielder, was a second team all-star.

Malaborsa was a key figure in the Stingers’ success in the indoor season. He led the league in scoring with five goals and three assists for eight points in seven games. He was twice named the game MVP.

Ulloa-Aguilar was also a significant offensive threat with three goals in six games. Ait Slimane pitched in with two goals. Barutciski had an assist and one game MVP to his credit.

With Gouabe in nets and Audy helping out, Concordia had the top defence in the conference. The team allowed just five goals in seven games.

The Stingers will return to action next August when preparations get under way for the RSEQ outdoor season.
