Soccer coach Pavlicik makes a move

The Concordia University Department of Recreation and Athletics announced that Vladimir Pavlicik has accepted a new assignment as Associate Director, Campus Recreation, to oversee the state-of-the-art fitness centre that went into full operation last January on the Sir George Williams campus.

Focusing his energies on the operations and development of the bustling new comprehensive workout facility will see him relinquish his duties as head coach of the Stingers men’s soccer program.

“We would like to thank Vladimir for his years of dedication to Concordia’s soccer program,” said Katie Sheahan, Director of Recreation and Athletics. “We will certainly miss his guidance and passion. At the same time, we are excited about the new facilities and the experience he brings to this operation.  This new facility represents a new era for the delivery of recreation programs and services at Concordia and, as such, requires full-time leadership.

Pavlicik started his career as an assistant coach in 1981. He has been at the helm of the men’s soccer program since the 1988 season. He led two teams to the national championship tournament (1992 and 2003) and won one Quebec conference title (1992). Under his direction, the program developed 14 all-Canadians.

“Soccer has been part of my life for a long time and I tried to convey the joy and beauty of the game to my players,” said Pavlicik. “I think the most rewarding part has been seeing players transfer success on the field into their personal and professional lives.”

His peers in the Canadian university coaching fraternity named Pavlicik coach of the year in 1998. He served as vice-president of the men’s coaching association for eight years, playing a key role in the implementation of the eight-team format at the national championship. He also worked tirelessly in compiling the men’s Top 10 rankings for Canadian Interuniversity Sport.

The Department of Recreation and Athletics will name a successor to Pavlicik shortly.
