Stingers men's soccer team brings home 7 conference awards

The Concordia Stingers men's soccer team had its best showing in almost 20 years when the RSEQ announced its all-stars and major awards on Monday afternoon.

Seven awards went to members of the 2021 team, including three for first-year player Anthony Phelps.  Originally from Halifax, the midfielder was named the RSEQ Rookie of the Year, a first-team all-star and to the league’s all-rookie team.

It’s the only the third time a member of the Stingers was named the top rookie in Quebec. Previous Concordia recipients were Anthony Primiani (1995) and Grant Needham (1991).

Phelps scored two goals in 12 games this season. He was named Player of the Game on two occasions. He is most famous for scoring the lone goal in a 1-0 victory over the first-place Montréal Carabins, who were the No. 1-ranked team in the country at the time. He was awarded a penalty shot. His initial shot was saved, but he buried the rebound.

Also named to the first all-star team was forward Mohammad Reza Nafar. The Montrealer was the leading scorer in the conference with seven goals and four assists for 11 points in 12 games. He earned four Player of the Game honours this season.

Forward Alberto Correa and defender Sean Holmes were named to the second all-star team. Correa was the second-leading scorer on the Stingers with four goals and an assist for five points in 11 games. He was Player of the Game once. Holmes, a fifth-year senior and the team captain, scored one goal in 10 games this season and was Player of the Game on two occasions.

The last time Concordia placed four players on the all-star team was in 2002.

Finally, goalkeeper Jordy Kerlegrand was named to the all-rookie team. He played five games and posted a 3-1-1 win-loss-tie record, including two shutouts. He allowed just four goals on 24 shots and had a goals-against average of 0.80.
