Olivier Roy named one of Quebec's top sports personalities

The Journal de Montréal named Concordia Stingers quarterback Olivier Roy one of its top sports personalities of 2021 in an article published today.

In collaboration with Léger, a respected market research and polling firm, the newspaper conducted a survey asking the question, “Who is the Quebec sports personality of the year?” The survey took place Nov. 26-28 and polled 1,049 Quebecers aged 18 and over.

Twenty-four athletes made the list that featured well-known celebrities like No. 1-ranked Laurent Duvernay-Tardif, the medical doctor who plays for the NFL’s New York Jets, and No. 5-ranked Jonathan Drouin of the Montreal Canadiens.

Roy was listed 24th in the final spot. He was the only RSEQ athlete to be honoured. He was one of three football players on the list behind Duvernay-Tardif and Alexandre Dupuis (No. 14), a fullback with the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

"I'm sure he will get teased a bit", said head coach Concordia Stingers Brad Collinson. "But at the end of the day, this is great for Concordia football and demonstrates how our program is moving forward. It's also a positive reflection on the role university football plays in Quebec."

Roy, the third-year student-athlete from Donnacona, Que., had a record-setting season with the Stingers. He was the RSEQ MVP and was named a second team U SPORTS all-Canadian.
