Stingers shutout Lakehead to earn berth at hockey nationals

The Concordia Stingers defeated the Lakehead Thunderwolves 4-0 in Thunder Bay, Ont. on Saturday night to win the OUA bronze medal game and secure a berth at the U Sports men’s hockey championship.

After a scoreless first period, the Stingers hammered the Thunderwolves with three goals in the second frame. Charles-Antoine Giguere opened the scoring at 2:59. Tyler Hylland scored at 14:10 and Julien Anctil stretched the lead even further at 15:41.

Lakehead played with added intensity in the final 20 minutes but couldn’t find the back of the net. Nicholas Girouard scored the final goal of the game into the empty net at 19:36 to wrap up the victory.

Concordia goaltender Jonathan Lemieux turned away 21 shots to earn the shutout.

The Stingers outshot the Thunderwolves 44-21. It was the third time Concordia played for the bronze medal in the last five seasons. The Stingers lost 5-2 to the Western Mustangs in 2020 and defeated the York Lions 3-2 in 2018.

The nationals take place in Charlottetown, P.E.I from March 16 to 19. The tournament seeding and schedule will be announced Sunday.
