The Concordia Stingers men’s hockey team put together a dominant weekend, earning wins over Ottawa and Queen’s to surge up to No. 2 in the U SPORTS national rankings.
On Thursday, Jan. 15, the Stingers opened the weekend with a 5–3 victory over the Ottawa Gee-Gees. Concordia received goals from Jacob Lafontaine, Mathieu Bizier, Julien Paillé, Blake Richardson, and Simon Lavigne. In goal, Nikolas Hurtubise was steady, stopping 16 shots to secure the win.
The Stingers followed that performance with an impressive 3–0 shutout against the Queen’s Gaels on Saturday, Jan. 17. Hurtubise was outstanding once again, turning aside 16 shots for his shutout. Hugo Primeau and Sean Larochelle provided the offense, while Alexandre Nadeau sealed the game with an empty-net goal late in the third period.
With the two victories, Concordia improves to 12–8 on the season, moving into third place in the OUA East standings and extending their winning streak to five games. The team’s recent form was reflected in the latest U SPORTS rankings, as the Stingers jumped from No. 7 last week to No. 2 this week.
Concordia returns to action on Thursday at McGill, before coming back home on Saturday to host UQTR in their Pride Game at 7 p.m.
