Stingers close regular season on 13-game heater, secure first-round bye

The Concordia Stingers men’s hockey team closed out the regular season in dominant fashion, winning their final two games to extend their streak to 13 straight victories.

On Friday night in Ottawa, the Stingers defeated the Gee-Gees 4-1 to clinch second place in the OUA East and secure a first-round bye in the playoffs. Concordia followed it up Saturday with a 4-3 win over RMC, highlighted by rookie Jacob Lafontaine, who scored both the game-tying and game-winning goals.

The Stingers finish the regular season with a 20-8 record — one win shy of last year’s Queen’s Cup championship team.

In net, Nikolas Hurtubise posted the best goals-against average in U SPORTS at 2.02 and finished with a .737 win percentage, fourth-best in the country.

Offensively, Nicholas Girouard led the team with 29 points (nine goals, 20 assists), while Mathieu Bizier paced the Stingers with 11 goals.

Concordia will now await the winner of Queen’s and McGill in the OUA quarterfinals.
