Stingers take it to limit in soccer final

Head coach Lloyd Barker and the Concordia men's soccer team were edged 1-0 by the Laval Rouge et Or in the Quebec Student Sports Federation indoor championship held in Trois-Rivières, Que. on March 28.

Laval’s Alexandre Tremblay scored in the 89th minute to give his Rouge et Or the provincial title.

Despite the heart-breaking loss, Barker was pleased with his team.

“We played so well,” said the Stingers’ mentor. “We were in the game right to the end.”

He was full of praise for goalkeeper Nicholas Giannone and mid-fielder Gonzalo Paredes.

He also credited the new Stinger Dome with helping the team progress.

“It made a world of difference,” he said.

Barker says the indoor season has gone a long way towards preparing his squad for the upcoming outdoor schedule.

“Our program has come full circle,” he said. “The players finally understand all the aspects needed to succeed – work, commitment, sacrifice.”

The Quebec university outdoor season starts the weekend of Sept. 10.
