Stinger rugby teams honor top athletes from 2013

The Concordia Stinger rugby programs celebrated their successful seasons and the outstanding play of several individuals at their annual banquet last week.

Third-year fullback Joey Fulginiti of the men’s team and Hughanna Gaw, a fourth-year No. 8 from the women’s side, were the MVPs.

Fulginiti, a third-year athlete from Ile Bizard, Que., was the leading scorer in the RSEQ. In eight regular season games he scored a phenomenal 121 points on six tries, 14 converts and 21 penalty goals. The second scorer in the conference had 48 points.

He was named the MVP in five out of eight regular season games and received the honor again after the Stingers’ semifinal victory.

Fulginiti is the RSEQ MVP and a member of the 2013 Quebec conference all-star team. It’s the second year in a row he’s received an all-star honor.

Gaw was named a CIS all-Canadian in women’s rugby last October. It was the second all-Canadian honor for Gaw. She also received the honor in 2011.

She is a four-time RSEQ all-star and she was Concordia’s Female Athlete of the Year in 2012.

This season Gaw, a native of Elgin, Que., scored three tries in seven regular season games. The No. 8 also scored four tries in two playoff games, including two in a tough 41-34 loss in the Quebec conference final.

Other honorees included: hooker Alfredo Cosentino, men’s team player; prop Sarah Scanlon, women’s team player; centre Stefan Lutzenkirchen, men’s most improved player; second row Jasmine Akkermans, women’s most improved player; prop Anthony Fraschetti, men’s outstanding rookie and centre Alex Tessier, women’s outstanding rookie.
