Is Concordia-McGill hockey's biggest rivalry?

If you think the granddaddy of all hockey rivalries is the Toronto Maple Leafs versus the Montreal Canadiens, you clearly haven’t seen the McGill Redmen and the Concordia Stingers go toe-to-toe.

The fierce rivalry will be reignited at the 32th annual Corey Cup, symbolic of men’s university hockey supremacy in Montreal, on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at the Ed Meagher Arena on Loyola campus.

The Stingers won the game last year with a 4-3 shootout victory. It was the first time the teams went to a shootout to decide the outcome. However, three of the last four Corey Cup showdowns have been decided in extra time.

This season has also seen the teams play intense, close games in the OUA conference. McGill took the initial contest 6-3 on Nov. 9. Concordia answered back with a 4-3 shootout victory on Nov. 16 and a 5-4 overtime win on Jan. 11.

If you are scoping out potential heroes, watch for Stingers Jean-Philippe Beaulieu, a second-year centre with three goals and an assist versus McGill this year, and rookie defenceman Bradley Lalonde who has five assists in the three games. The Corey Cup was dedicated in 1988 by Ronald Corey, then president and governor of the National Hockey League's Montreal Canadiens.

The Ed Meagher Arena is located at 7200 Sherbrooke St. W., on Concordia University’s Loyola campus in N.D.G.
