Stingers send defenceman Carl Neill to Siberia

Concordia defenceman Carl Neill is packing his bags for Krasnoyarsk, Russia where he will represent Canada's in the men's hockey competition at the FISU Winter Universiade.

Also known at the World University Games, the international competition featuring more than 50 countries and approximately 2,500 athletes, takes place March 2-12 in the third largest city in Siberia.

Neill, a second-year star from Lachute, Que., was the top scorer on the Stingers with four goals and 29 assists for 33 points in 28 OUA games. He ranked 11th in the Ontario conference and was the second highest scoring defenceman.

He follows in the footsteps of former Stinger Olivier Hinse who was the captain of Canada’s 2017 team. They won a bronze medal at the games in Almaty, Kazakstan.

Canada will play five preliminary games in hopes of reaching the playoffs. The following is the team’s schedule:

March 2 vs. Germany

March 4 vs. Latvia

March 6 vs. Switzerland

March 8 vs. Sweden

March 9 vs. Kazakstan

March 11 – Semifinals

March 12 – Medal Round

The FISU Winter Universiade is a biennial international multi-sport event open to competitors who are at least 17 and less than 25 years of age as of Jan. 1 in the year of the games. Participants must be full-time students at a post-secondary institution (university, college, CEGEP) or have graduated from a post-secondary institution in the year preceding the event.

The 2019 edition will feature 11 sports: alpine skiing, bandy, biathlon, curling, cross country skiing, hockey, short track speed skating, figure skating, freestyle skiing, ski orienteering and snowboarding.
