Birds and Bees to battle in Round 2 of hockey playoffs

The Concordia Stingers men's hockey team will square off against the top-seeded Carleton Ravens in the second round of the OUA playoffs, beginning Wednesday night in Ottawa.

The best-of-three series moves to Concordia and the Ed Meagher Arena on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. Game 3, if necessary, will be back at Carleton on Sunday night.

The Ravens swept the RMC Paladins in two games straight in the opening round of playoffs. Concordia eliminated its arch nemesis, McGill University, in the third-and-deciding game of its series.

Carleton finished in first place in the 10-team OUA East conference with a 24-3-1 win-loss-overtime loss record. The Stingers were fifth with a 13-10-5 performance.

There were four regular season meetings between the Ravens and the Stingers. Carleton won all four. The games were tight, expect for a 5-2 Ravens’ victory on Jan. 25.

Stinger captain Philippe Sanche is someone to keep an eye on in this series. He had a couple of goals against Carleton in the regular season. While rookie sensation Tyler Hylland and second-year left wing Anthony Beauchamp were serious threats in the opening round, scoring three and two goals, respectively.

This is just the second post-season rendezvous between the birds and the bees. The only other time the teams met was in the first round of the 2009 playoffs. Concordia won the first game 6-3, but lost the next two by scores of 2-1 and 3-2.
