Men's hockey in epic showdowns with UQTR, McGill this weekend

If you are the type that enjoys hard-driving, rock'em-sock'em sports, then the No. 10-ranked Concordia Stingers men's hockey team has a couple of can't-miss games for you this weekend.

First up, the Stingers host the No. 3-ranked UQTR Patriotes on Saturday at 7 p.m. The teams played back-to-back games in Trois-Rivieres last weekend. Concordia won the first one 4-2 and lost the rematch 5-3.

“Any time you play a team three times in a row, it’s going to be a very intense competition,” said second-year defender Kyle Havlena. “We’re looking forward to it.”

The following night, the 35th annual Corey Cup is set for a 7 p.m. puck-drop. Concordia and the McGill Redbirds will battle for men’s university hockey supremacy in Montreal. Typically, this is the biggest regular season crowd of the year with a raucous assembly of passionate hockey fans taking the atmosphere in the Ed Meagher Arena to new heights.

“We’re very competitive teams and talent-wise we’re pretty similar,” said Havlena. “Any time we play against McGill, it’s a great game, but the Corey Cup takes the rivalry up a level. We’re always excited to play against McGill. There are bragging rights for sure.”

The teams have split their two meetings to date. McGill won 5-3 on Oct. 16 and Concordia answered with a 2-1 victory on Oct. 20.

The Stingers, Patriotes and Redbirds are bunched up at the top of the OUA East standings. UQTR is in first place with an 8-2 win-loss record and 16 points. Concordia boasts a 7-3 record and 14 points. McGill has six wins, two losses and two overtime losses, also for 14 points.

“These are big games for the standings,” said Havlena. “We’re still growing as a team and getting better and we need to get as many points as we can this weekend to put ourselves in a good position for playoffs.”
