Hylland joins Fecteau, Bégin-Cyr at FISU Winter Games in Lake Placid

Tyler Hylland, a third-year centre with the Concordia Stingers, has been added to the U Sports men’s hockey all-star team representing Canada at the 2023 FISU World University Games in Lake Placid, N.Y.

Hylland is a late addition to Canada’s roster, being awarded the spot when another player pulled out at the last minute. The Mercier, Que. native joins Team Canada for a practice in Ottawa today and the group heads to New York on Tuesday. 

He has played 58 regular season OUA conference games over three seasons, picking up 22 goals and 34 assists for 56 points. Hylland was named to the OUA all-rookie team and second all-star team in 2019-20. 

Canada returns to the competition four years after a bronze medal performance at 2019 Winter Games in Krasnoyarsk, Russia. Canada last won gold in 2013 in Trentino, Italy. Twelve teams are competing for the gold medal in 2023.

They have been divided into two pools of six teams each and will play a single round-robin within their pools. The top two finishers in each will advance to the semifinals.

The schedule is as follows:

Jan. 12 vs. Ukraine – 1 p.m.

Jan. 13 vs. Sweden – 1 p.m.

Jan. 15 vs. Japan – 9:30 a.m.

Jan. 17 vs. Latvia – 1 p.m.

Jan. 18 vs. Czechia – 4:30 p.m.

Jan. 21 – semifinals

Jan. 22 – medal games

Two members of the Concordia women’s hockey program have also been selected to represent Canada at the Winter Games. Forwards Emmy Fecteau and Rosalie Bégin-Cyr were named to the team in December.

The two play on the same line with the Stingers and have been wreaking havoc all season long. Fecteau of St. Odilon, Que. is the second-leading scorer in the RSEQ conference with 10 goals and nine assists in 14 games. Bégin-Cyr, a native of St. Georges, Que., has six goals and eight assists for 14 points in 14 games.

There are eight teams going for gold on the women’s side. They play a single round robin and the top four teams will advance to the semifinals.

Canada won silver medals in 2015, 2017 and 2019. The last gold medal was claimed in 2013 in Trentino, Italy.

Jan. 11 vs. Slovakia – 8 p.m.

Jan. 14 vs. Czechia – 4:30 p.m.

Jan. 15 vs. Japan – 4:30 p.m.

Jan. 17 vs. Great Britain – 4:30 p.m.

Jan. 18 vs. U.S. – 8 p.m.

Jan. 20 – semifinals

Jan. 21 – medal games

The 31st winter edition of the FISU World University Games gets under way this week and wraps up Jan. 22. It is the largest international winter multi-sports event for student-athletes with more than 2,500 participants from more than 50 countries.
