The Stingers beat McGill twice over the weekend to open their regular season.
Women’s hockey played their season opener against McGill at Place Bell on Saturday and defeated the Martlets 3-1. The Stingers held their home opener on Sunday, Oct. 20 vs the Martlets, also unveiling the 2024 U SPORTS Championship banners in a pre-game ceremony. They beat the Martlets again, this time by a final score of 3-0.
All 3 Stingers’ goals were scored on the powerplay in the season opener. Defender Léonie Philbert was the one to open the scoring in the first frame. Forwards Alexis Bedier and Jessymaude Drapeau both scored in the second period. Goaltender Arianne Leblanc made 18 saves to help cement the 3-1 victory.
Forward Émilie Lussier opened the scoring less than 2 minutes into the game on Sunday, and scored again shorthanded in the second period. Drapeau scored a powerplay goal in the middle frame as well, securing the win for the Stingers. Goaltender Jordyn Verbeek made 14 saves for the shutout.
The Stingers are currently ranked first in U SPORTS with a 2-0 record and 4 points.
Women’s hockey will be back at home to face the Bishop’s Gaiters on Friday, Oct. 25 at 7 p.m.
