The Stingers family mourns the loss of former assistant men’s hockey coach Peter Bender.
Coach Bender passed away on December 3, 2024, having been unable to recover from a devastating stroke.
Following his career at John Abbott as a professor and football coach, Bender moved on to coach professionally in England and Italy.
In 2002, Coach Bender joined Concordia hockey joining head coach Kevin Figsby and was a mainstay for the program until 2015.
“It was a tremendous pleasure having Peter join the Stingers Program," said Figsby. "We had coached together for so long and our friendship was evident. We would always say that hockey wasn’t just a game, it was an opportunity for young players to grow and develop as people and move forward on their life’s pathway. Peter truly played a large part in the lives of many. He will be sadly missed and always remembered.”
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested to consider making a contribution in Peter Bender's memory to the John Abbott College Foundation or the Jewish General Hospital Foundation. Visitation is scheduled for the Salon funéraire Rideau Funeral Home, located at 4275, boul. des Sources, Dollard-des-Ormeaux, Que., on Dec. 18 (6:30 to 8:30 p.m.) and Dec. 19 (12 noon to 2:30 p.m.). That will be followed by a celebration of life service on Dec. 19 (2:30 to 3:30 p.m.), which will be streamed live.
