Men's hockey capture first OUA Championship in program history

Stingers Men's hockey beat TMU 4-1 to win the 113th Queen's Cup as best team in Ontario University Athletics conference.

The Stingers travelled to Toronto on Saturday, March 14, to take on the Toronto Metropolitain University Bold in the 113th Queen's Cup at the Mattamy Athletic Centre. Concordia jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead thanks to first period goals by Nicholas Girouard and Blake Richardson.

TMU closed the gap to 2-1 with less than 5 minutes left in the third period, but Sean Larochelle iced the game with an empty-net goal, followed by another empty-net goal by rookie Alxandre Nadeau in the closing seconds of the game.

Goalie Nikolas Hurtubise was sharp, making 36 saves, and was named Player of the Game.

It was the first time Concordia had ever qualified for the Queen's Cup final. The Stingers finished at the top of the OUA East conference and earned a first-round bye before beating McGill in three games, then Queen's in two games to advance to the conference final.

Concordia will travel to Ottawa on Tuesday for the U SPORTS National Championship at TD Place. Head coach Marc-André Elément and his team go into the tournament ranked third and will play Moncton on Friday, Mar. 21, at 1 p.m.

The games will be broadcasted on CBC Sports and Radio Canada's digital channels.
