Goaltender Maxime Joyal blanked the RMC Paladins and the Queen’s Golden Gaels to give the Concordia Stingers men’s hockey team two key victories on the weekend.
The 22-year-old Châteauguay, Que. native turned away 33 shots to help the Stingers shut out the Paladins 5-0 last Friday. The following day, he faced 28 shots in a 3-0 win over the Golden Gaels.
“Part of the reason for his success is his work ethic,” said head coach Kevin Figsby of his star netminder. “He trains very hard on and off the ice.”
It was the third shutout in five games for Joyal. He also stymied the Toronto Varsity Blues on Nov. 7. He stopped 44 shots in a 3-0 victory.
In 12 games so far this season Joyal boasts a 2.33 goals-against average. His save percentage is .936. He leads the CIS in shutouts. He is third overall in save percentage and fifth in goals-against average.
“The team has a lot of confidence in him,” said Figsby. “Maxime also has a lot of confidence in the team. It’s nice to watch the dynamic.”
Joyal joined the Stingers in January 2008. He played four seasons in the QMJHL, mostly with the Saint John Sea Dogs and the Quebec Remparts, and had a brief stint with the Elmira Jackals of the East Coast league before joining the Stingers.
He is studying Economics at Concordia.
