3 Stingers win foundation bursaries

Three members of the Concordia Stingers sports programs were honored at a gala dinner hosted by the Fondation de l’athlete d’excellence du Québec in Boucherville, Que., on Nov. 24.

Kristin Portwine, a second-year forward with the women’s basketball team, was fêted for her leadership. She received a $1750 Gildan bursary that is awarded to a student-athlete who has distinguished herself through community service and who has played a leadership role in her sport.

She was a top recruit iin 2007-’08 and played a big role in the Stingers’ resurgence. Off the court, he volunteered at Sun Youth and Camp Kinkora. Portwine maintained a 3.24 grade-point average in the John Molson School of Business

Nikita Chicoine, a second-year Exercise Science student, was acknowledged for her athletic excellence in an individual sport. As a rookie with the Concordia wrestling team she won a silver medal at the 2008 university wrestling championships. She also finished 16th at the 2007 World Junior Wrestling Championships. She received $1750.

Quarterback Liam Mahoney was the recipient of a Montreal Alouettes $1250 bursary for his exceptional contributions on the football field in 2007. He was the Quebec university and Canadian Interuniversity Sport Rookie of the Year.
