Tittley, Greenwood named Athletes of the Year

Rugby player Jackie Tittley and linebacker Cory Greenwood were named the Concordia University Athletes of the Year at a gala awards ceremony attended by more than 400 people on Saturday night in Montreal.

Jackie Tittley is an exceptional second-year athlete who brings a lot of skills and character to her team, especially for a young player. From a skill point, women’s rugby head coach Graeme McGravie says Tittley, a centre from Kirkland, Que., has it all. She can kick, pass, run, tackle.

“She’s such a dominant force, other teams in Quebec scheme to run away from her,” McGravie says. “But she can run side-to-side with anyone. She can adapt on the fly and she makes tackles for other people."

In Concordia’s 2009 championship season, she was the leading scorer on the Stingers, collecting three tries, 22 converts, and five penalty goals for 74 points in six games. She was a Quebec all-star and a CIS all-Canadian for the second straight year.

Cory Greenwood, a native of Kingston, Ont., is one of hardest working athletes to ever wear the Stingers’ uniform. He is in superb physical condition and has earned a lot of respect for his devotion to training.

“Cory is the type of athlete that only comes around once in awhile,” says Concordia head coach Gerry McGrath. “He has tremendous speed and size for his position. He is very athletic and very fast. He’s also a physical player.”

In eight games, Greenwood collected 62 total tackles to lead the Quebec football conference. His 52 solo tackles and 20 assists ranked him fourth in the CIS.

He finishes his career as a three-time Quebec all-star, a CIS all-Canadian and last November he was named the outstanding defensive player in Canadian university football. Greenwood is expected to be a first round pick in the CFL draft scheduled for May 2. He has also attracted the attention of a few NFL scouts.
