After beating McGill, Stingers set for rematch

This Wednesday the fierce rivalry between the Concordia Stingers and the McGill Redmen hockey teams will be re-ignited at the 25th edition of the Corey Cup, symbolic of men’s university hockey supremacy in Montreal.

The Corey Cup was dedicated in 1988 by Ronald Corey, then president and governor of the National Hockey League's Montreal Canadiens.

This year’s edition will be played at Concordia’s Ed Meagher Arena, 7200 Sherbrooke St. W., on the Loyola campus. The puck drops at 7:30 p.m.

The teams have met three times this season with Concordia taking two victories from the No. 1-ranked Redmen. The Stingers won 3-2 in overtime last Oct. 23 at home and 4-2 last Friday at McGill. The Redmen’s victory came on Oct. 28 and was also by a 3-2 score.

“The Redmen are coming to our rink looking to redeem themselves,” said Stinger captain Eric Begin. “We’ll be ready. We’re practicing hard and working on some things especially for them.”

Stingers players to watch include right wing Michael Stinziani who is the second leading scorer in the CIS with 12 goals and 31 assists for 43 points in 25 games. He scored one goal and added four assists in the three games against McGill this season. Linemate George Lovatsis has three goals and an assist in the series. The Stingers’ centre is the third leading scorer in the CIS with 20 goals and 20 assists for 40 points in 26 games.

Rookie goaltender Nick Champion has also been a key player. He has been in nets for all three games. He has turned away 109 of 116 shots for a save percentage of .939. His goals-against average versus McGill is 2.33.

The Concordia Swarm, the student fan club, will be out in large numbers as will several community groups. It looks like a great crowd for one of the biggest games of the year.

Tickets

Tickets are $7 for adults, $5 for non-Concordia students and $3 for seniors. Children 12-and-under are admitted free of charge.
