Top athletes honoured at Stingers banquet

Rugby player Hughanna Gaw was named Female Athlete of the Year and football player Max Caron and wrestler David Tremblay shared Male Athlete the Year honours at the annual Concordia Stingers gala awards banquet attended by more than 450 people on April 14 in Montreal.

Hughanna Gaw was awarded the Sally Kemp Award, which is presented to the Concordia Female Athlete of the Year. An exceptional third-year athlete, she was a big contributor to her team’s success in 2011. She helped the Stingers win the Kelly-Anne Drummond Cup and reach the Quebec championship game.

The No. 8 player from Elgin, Que. scored eight tries in six games during the regular season and was the leading tackler on the Stingers. She was named her team’s game MVP on two occasions and was Concordia Female Athlete of the Week on Sept. 13 and Sept. 26.

She was an RSEQ all-star and a CIS all-Canadian. This is the second time in her university career that Gaw has received national recognition. In 2009, she was named the CIS Rookie of the Year.

Tremblay and Caron were co-winners of the Dr. Robert J. Brodrick Award presented annually to the top male athlete at Concordia University.

A native of Stoney Point, Ont., David Tremblay won his fourth consecutive gold medal when the CIS wrestling championship finals were held in February. He earned first team CIS all-Canadian honors for his efforts.

Tremblay’s gold medal at 61 kilos helped Concordia secure the men’s championship at the national tournament. The Stingers finished first with 56 points. It was the second consecutive wrestling team title for Concordia.

Over the course of the year, Tremblay won all six tournaments he competed in as a member of the Stingers. He was undefeated in all six tournaments, posting a perfect 19-0 record.

Last December he won the Canadian Olympic Team Trials and last month he won the 2012 FILA Pan American Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Kissimmee, Fla. With that victory he has earned a berth at the 2012 London Summer Olympics.

Middle linebacker Max Caron won the Presidents Trophy as the outstanding defensive player in Canadian Interuniversity Sport last November, capping off a truly exceptional season.

In nine university games Caron, a second-year Political Science student from Kingston, Ont., collected 67 solo tackles and 23 assists for 78.5 total tackles to lead the CIS. He also led the nation in solo tackles, average tackles per game and interceptions returned for touchdowns.

Caron had five interceptions overall which was tops in Quebec and the second best total in the CIS. He collected 3.5 sacks, 11 tackles for losses, two forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries. He set several RSEQ records and rewrote the Concordia record book.
