Five top athletes recruited by Concordia Stingers varsity programs have been selected by the Fondation de l’athlète d’excellence du Québec (FAEQ) to receive recruitment bursaries.
Two local basketball players lead the list of athletes the FAEQ has offered bursaries to. Marilyse Roy-Viau, an all-star forward from Dawson College, has been offered a $7000 bursary. She plans to join the Stingers in August and will study Human Relations.
Youssef Ouahrig, an all-Canadian point guard from Champlain College, St. Lambert, has also been chosen for a $7000 bursary.
A women’s rugby player, Bianca Farella, has been indentified by the FAEQ and will receive $3,500. She played for Dawson College and with TMR on the club circuit. She has also played on Canada’s women’s U20 team and 7s team. She has been accepted in the Psychology program at Concordia.
Jordan Steen, an elite wrestler from Vanier College, will receive $2500. He competes at 84 kilos and recently represented Canada at the Sassari Wrestling Tournament, an international competition held June 2 in Italy. He will study Sociology.
Finally, football player Roman Grozman has been offered $3000 to study at Concordia. A top offensive lineman from Richmond Hill, Ont., he will receive one of only four FAEQ bursaries awarded to out-of-province students. These are designed to help attract top athletes to Quebec.
The FAEQ will present the bursaries at a gala dinner on Nov. 28 in Montreal. Overall 36 athletes have been selected for recruitment bursaries worth a total of $139,500.
The FAEQ is an independent organization comprised of stakeholders from different backgrounds, including business, education and sport. Its mission is to provide financial support to elite student-athletes and to promote them as role models in Quebec society.
