Concordia's Ed Meagher Arena to get $6.5 million update

The Quebec government and Concordia University announced a $6.5 million investment for the reconstruction and redevelopment of the Ed Meagher Arena on the university’s Loyola Campus in N.D.G.

At a press conference this morning, Minister of Immigration and Cultural Communities and MNA for Notre-Dame-de-Grace, Kathleen Weil, announced $3.25 million in government assistance from the Quebec-Municipalities Infrastructure Program.

Dr. Frederick Lowy, Concordia’s President and Vice-Chancellor, was on hand to thank the Quebec government, Minister Weil and to announce the university will match the investment.

The work will include an updated NHL-sized ice surface, the replacement of the refrigeration system and redesigned locker rooms and storage space. Improvements are also planned for the roof and windows.

The arena is currently operational eight months of the year. When the project is complete it will be able to maintain an ice surface all-year round.

The Concordia Stingers men’s and women’s hockey programs will benefit from the state-of-the-art facility. The improvements and extra ice time will also be a boon to recreational users and the local community.

The work will be completed in the fall of 2013.
