Hockey Stingers dominate McGill in season series

The Concordia Stingers men’s hockey team earned an impressive five of six points in the three-game series with the McGill Redmen in OUA conference action this season.

The strong showing started at the 26th annual Corey Cup game last Oct. 5. Before a packed house at the home-opener Concordia won 6-5. It was the first Corey Cup victory since February of 2002 for the Stingers.

The next meeting was Jan. 9 at McGill when the Redmen eked out a 3-2 overtime victory.

With a 3-2 shootout victory on Jan. 25, the Stingers took the rubber-match, defeating the Redmen on their own ice.

It was an exciting finish as Concordia’s George Lovatis scored with 35 seconds left in regulation time to tie the game, forcing overtime. When the game wasn’t decided after five extra minutes, the teams went to a shootout. It was Lovatsis, a fourth-year centre, who came through again scoring the only marker and lifting the Stingers to victory.

In the three games, Lovatsis collected three goals and three assists in regulation time. He also scored the winner in the Game 3 shootout.

Rookie goaltender Antonio Mastropietro was also instrumental in the Stingers’ success. Playing in the last two games, he gave up just five goals and turned away 70 of 75 shots (save percentage of 93.3).

On the draft schedule for the 2013-14 season, Concordia and McGill are schedule to meet twice.
