Rugby player receives $28,000 scholarship

Percival Graham of the Concordia men's rugby team was awarded the Normand D. Hébert Scholarship in Engineering worth $28,000 over four years at Dean Nabil Esmail's awards ceremonies held at Centre Mont-Royal last month.

This award is part of the undergraduate entrance scholarship program. The recipient is selected by Concordia University during admission file processing. It is given annually to a full-time student with top entering grades in the Faculty of Engineering. Graham was selected based on his exceptional grades coming out of the Pure and Applied Science program at Vanier College.

Although he had already been awarded an entrance scholarship, Graham had no idea he was being considered for the larger and more prestigious Hébert scholarship. He was notified by representatives of the Engineering department as he was entering a class last October.

"They came to one of my classes as I was about to write a mid-term exam and told me," Graham recalled. "It was an exam in mechanical drawing. I made one mistake on the exam. My mark was 29 out of 30."

Graham is currently enrolled in the Mechanical Engineering program, but is giving some thought to transferring into Aerospace Engineering. He has no qualms about balancing his demanding academics with varsity sports.

"I plan to continue playing rugby," said the first-year scrum half. "I played at high school and at Vanier. I really like the environment here."
