Ric Suggitt, head coach of the Canadian national senior men’s rugby team, was the guest speaker as the Concordia Stingers gathered to honor their elite at an inaugural rugby banquet at Brasserie Molson last Saturday.
More than 80 people from the men’s and women’s rugby teams and their alumni were entranced as he spoke of the importance of the rugby family in players’ lives both now and in the future.
Suggitt took over leadership of the national men’s program in February 2004. Prior to that he successfully coached the senior women’s team for four years and had led the national 7s team. He also served as head coach of Rugby Canada’s under-23 academy in Kingston for two years.
From the Concordia men’s team three individuals were honored. Scott Laekas received the Captain’s Award, Mathieu Lassalle was the most improved player and Tyler Brimacombe was presented the Founder’s Trophy as the outstanding team player.
On the women’s side, Sydney Theriault was presented the Captain’s Award, Mel Tranchemontagne was the most improved player and Cathy Nichols was the outstanding team player.
Rugby team MVPs and rookie awards will be announced at the Concordia athletic banquet on April 10.
