All-stars lead men's rugby to RSEQ final

Jonathan Dextras-Romagnino and a couple of teammates received good news this week as the Concordia Stingers men’s rugby team prepared for the conference championship.

The fifth-year centre from Montreal won the RSEQ Social Engagement and Community Service Award when the conference announced its major award winners and all-stars.

Dextras-Romangnino successfully combines a demanding schedule in the university’s Business Administration program with his rugby commitments and volunteer work. His spends a lot of time working with youth associated with Holy Family Church. He animates activities on a weekly basis and he also acts as a camp counselor for the church in the summer months.

In addition, he was one of three Stingers named to the conference all-star team. He earns high praise for his decision-making on the field and his play both on the attack and in the defensive structure of the team’s backs.

“Jonathan is a team captain and is a strong leader on and off the field,” said Concordia head coach Clive Gibson. “He is a leader by example and you can find him fully participating and encouraging others to do the same, whether it be a practice, in the weight room or leading his fellow Stingers as they cheer on other varsity teams.”

Joining him on the honour roll are flanker Gavin Drohan, a second-year player from Toronto, and Adriano D’Angelo, a third-year fly half from Montreal.

Drohan led the Stingers in tackles this season. He was Man of the Match in two regular season games and Concordia’s 13-10 victory over the Bishop’s Gaiters in the semifinals.

With 22 points D’Angelo was the leading scorer on the Stingers and ranked fourth in the league. He handles the team’s kicking duties. He is a hard working athlete who can play many positions in support of his team.

Concordia will meet the McGill Redmen in the league title game on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Molson Stadium. The Redmen won both regular season meetings, but they were close contests – 21-13 on Sept. 25 and 23-6 on Oct. 23.
