Rugby star Gareth Rees to hold clinic at Concordia

The Concordia Stingers rugby programs will hold a clinic for coaches and athletes with former international rugby star Gareth Rees this Saturday on the university’s Loyola campus in N.D.G.

Rees is a world-renowned rugby player who represented Canada in international competitions from 1986 through 1999. The fly half/fullback played in four World Cups. He won 55 caps for Canada, captaining them on 23 occasions and scoring 487 test points, still a Canadian national record.

In addition to playing for Canada, Rees had a long professional career in Europe playing for the Bedford Blues, Newport in South Wales, Mérignac in France, the London Wasps and the Harlequins, also a London-based team.

At the 2011 Rugby World Cup in New Zealand, Rees was inducted into the International Rugby Board Hall of Fame. While in New Zealand Rees also worked for TSN, reporting on the event.

Rees will present two sessions open to all players 13 years of age and up – one on the 7s game and the other on kicking (his specialty throughout his career). Activities begin at 10 a.m. and wrap up at 4 p.m.

The cost is $20 for the morning session on the 7s game and $20 for the afternoon session on kicking. The cost for the full day, including lunch, is $35.
