Rugby Stingers to depart for Italy

Two members of the Concordia Stingers men's rugby program have been named to the Canadian entry at the 2nd World University Rugby 7 on 7 Championship being held Aug. 3-6 in Rome, Italy.

Scott Gill of Beaconsfield, Que. and Jason White of White Rock, B.C. will attend Canada's training camp at University of Calgary before leaving for Italy on the weekend.

During the summer Gill, a senior Engineering student, plays with the Beaconsfield Rugby Club and the Quebec Caribou of the Rugby Canada Super League. He also spent a year with the Pride, which is Canada's under-23 program.

"He has a tremendous foot and will be kicking in Italy," says Concordia head coach Clive Gibson. "I'm sure his kicking and experience with the Pride are what make him a good fit for this university championship team."

White, also an Engineering major, comes out of the Semiahmoo high school program in British Columbia and also competes with the Quebec Caribou. He will play wing or fullback for the Canadian team.

"He has tremendous speed and his hands are phenomenal," says Gibson. "He is a solid tackler and his work ethic is amazing. He's putting a lot of time and work into preparing for this international competition."

Twelve student-athletes and three officials will comprise the Canadian contingent. To be eligible to compete a rugby player must be a Canadian citizen between the ages of 17 and 28 and be a full-time student at a post-secondary institution.

Fifteen countries are currently entered in the prestigious competition, including France, Great Britain and South Africa.
