Kean stings SMU in OT

It took six overtime periods and nine field goals but all-Canadian kicker Warren Kean of Dundas, Ont., finally put the game away with a 33-yarder giving the Concordia Stingers a 34-31 victory over the Saint Mary's Huskies.

A crowd of 2019 was on hand at Concordia Stadium to see Kean kick five field goals in regulation time, including a 24-yard score with 15 seconds left to play to tie the game.

In overtime Kean and Saint Mary's kicker Justin Palardy traded field goals in three overtime possessions - the first, third and fifth exchanges.

On the sixth possession, the Huskies were shutdown when Concordia all-Canadian halfback Sammy Okpro intercepted an Erik Glavic pass and returned it 28 yards. Stinger quarterback Scott Syvret took over and moved his team forward nine yards, setting up Kean's 33-yard game winner.

The win clinches second place in the Quebec conference and gives the Stingers a semifinal game at home on Nov. 4.

Concordia running back Andrew Hamilton enjoyed another exceptional day. He carried the ball 22 times for 214 yards. His efforts helped the Stingers roll up 471 yards of offence. The stingy Concordia defence held the Huskies to 272 yards of offence – 131 rushing and 141 passing.

Concordia (6-1) visits the Sherbrooke Vert et Or (2-5) next Saturday. Saint Mary's (2-4) hosts St. Francis Xavier (2-4) on Friday night.
