Concordia Stingers Sammy Okpro and Warren Kean have been named the Quebec University Football League (QUFL) Players of the Week for the period ending Oct. 22.
Okpro, a five-foot-10, 197-pound all-Canadian halfback back from Pierrefonds Que., was named the Defensive Player of the Week. His interception in the sixth overtime period stopped a Saint Mary’s Huskies' drive and set up the winning field goal, allowing the No. 4-ranked Stingers to win 34-31. The third-year Economics major also had four tackles including three solo and two assisted tackles.
Kean, a six-foot-one, 200-pound all-Canadian kicker from Dundas, Ont., was named the Special Teams Player of the Week as he led the Stingers to victory in six overtimes. The fourth-year Human Relations major accounted for 28 of the Stingers’ 34 points with a convert and nine field goals (five in regulation and four in overtime). Kean connected on nine of 12 attempts including the game-winning 33-yard field goal in the sixth overtime. He set a new CIS record for most field goals in a game.
Quarterback Benoit Groulx from Université Laval was named the Offensive Player of the Week as he led the Rouge et Or to a 34-7 victory over the Acadia Axemen last Saturday.
