Donovan leads Quebec grid all-stars

The Concordia Stingers placed eight athletes, including 2005 President’s Trophy winner Patrick Donovan, on the 2006 Quebec University Football League all-star team which was unveiled this afternoon.

The middle linebacker from Laconia, N.H., who was the outstanding defensive player in Quebec and Canada last season, averaged a conference-high six tackles a game. In six games, he also had one sack, one interception and one fumble return. A team captain and a devoted student of the game, he anchored one of the best defences in the country.

Three defensive backs and a lineman join Donovan on the defensive all-star team.

Third-year halfback Sammy Okpro, a 2005 all-star and all-Canadian, was a unanimous choice. The Pierrefonds, Que. native led the QUFL in total tackles with 44. He also had three interceptions.

Moe Sidibe, a third-year cornerback from Toronto, earns his third straight all-star honor. The 2005 all-Canadian had six tackles and two interceptions in five games.

Sylvester Sarfo, also a cornerback, earns his first all-star mention. The Ottawa native was the Quebec conference co-leader in passes defended. He had seven breakups and two interceptions.

Defensive tackle Mark Kang, who was born in Incheon, South Korea and raised in Pointe Claire, Que., makes his first appearance on the elite list. The former fullback recorded 17.5 tackles, including three sacks.

The only Concordia member of the offensive all-star team was tackle Keith Dauper – the Dublin, Ohio native who checks in at six-feet, seven inches and 310-pounds. The leader of the Stinger o-line is a two-time all-star.

On special teams, the Stingers continue to dominate the punter and kicker positions. Ottawa’s Mike Renaud, the 2004 and 2005 all-Canadian punter, makes his third appearance on the all-star team. He punted 48 times for an average of 39.4 yards.

Warren Kean earns his third consecutive all-star at the kicker position. The Dundas, Ont. native connected on 20 of 32 field goals with his longest measuring 44 yards. He set one CIS and four Quebec conference records for field goals this season. He was also good on 21 of 21 converts. He was a 2005 all-Canadian.
