Linebacker Patrick Donovan and several Stinger teammates played the last games of their university careers on Saturday when Concordia lost 28-12 to the Laval Rouge et Or in the QUFL championship at PEPS stadium in Ste. Foy, Que.
Six Stingers have wrapped up their careers with Concordia: Donovan, defensive tackle Mark Kang, safety Junior Bishop, long snapper Ryan Webster, offensive guard Bren Buckley and punter Mike Renaud.
Donovan played his heart out, collecting five solo tackles, seven assists, one sack and a forced fumble. Donovan and his brother Mickey have been around Concordia since 2001. Both were dominating linebackers who brought a lot of honor to the Stingers' program.
Mickey was the Quebec conference's outstanding defensive player in 2003 and 2004. He finished his career in 2004 when he won the President's Trophy as the outstanding defensive player in the country.
Pat picked up where his brother left off, winning the President's Trophy in 2005. He has been nominated again this season. The winner will be announced next week at the Vanier Cup festivities in Saskatchewan.
Bishop had two assisted tackles in his last game, while Kang, a 2006 Quebec all-star, had two solos and six assists.
Renaud, the 2004 and 2005 all-Canadian punter, averaged 39.10 yards on 10 punts in his final game.
Concordia finished the 2006 season with an 8-3 win-loss record, which includes a preseason victory versus the Queen's Golden Gaels. In the final CIS rankings, the Stingers held the No. 6 position.
Head coach Gerry McGrath will meet the 2006 team for the final time on Tuesday. Then the focus will switch to recruiting and preparing for the 2007 football season.
