Tyrrell, Miller tackle record books in Stingers win

A couple of Stingers took aim at the Concordia and RSEQ football record books in a 63-0 victory over the Bishop’s Gaiters on Saturday afternoon.

Rookie returner James Tyrrell set an RSEQ conference record with his exceptional performance. The Dorval, Que. native returned eight punts for 215 yards to break the single game record of 214 yards set in 2009 by Frank Bruno of the Montréal Carabins and matched in 2011 by Concordia’s Kris Robertson.

Tyrrell took one of his punts back 55 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter increasing Concordia’s lead to 53-0.

Quarterback Trenton Miller completed 29 of 41 passes for 388 yards and five touchdowns. Overall, he directed an explosive offence that rolled up 551 yards and 32 first downs.

With five TD strikes in a single game Miller ties a Concordia University record set by Sean Hoas (1998) and matched by Reid Quest (2011).

One interesting spin on Miller's accomplishment - all 5 TDs were caught by first-year Stingers - Yanic Lessard with three, Justin Julien and Jahlani Gilbert-Knorren.

Miller also carried the ball nine times for 90 yards. He was the leading rusher in the game.

On defence, the Stingers held the Gaiters to 12 first downs, 30 yards rushing and 119 yards passing. Leading the way was cornerback Connor O’Brien who had two interceptions including one he returned 44 yards for a touchdown.

Rookie defensive tackle Michael Sanelli was also impressive with 6.5 tackles, including two sacks, and a forced fumble.

Head coach Mickey Donovan was pleased with most aspects of the game, but not all of them.

“I thought defensively we played well,” he said. “I felt like we finished our first game. I thought Pat (defensive co-ordinator Donovan) and the kids really stepped up. I thought offensively we were good but that we can still be better.”

Lessard, the rookie receiver who scored three touchdowns earned high praise from Donovan.

“I think Yanic is the best offensive rookie in the country,” said the coach. “He’s a tough kid. He’s very bright and can play any receiver position. He knows them all. And I love his work ethic.”

Concordia’s win-loss record is now 3-3, while Bishop’s fall to 1-5. The Stingers cross the city to meet the McGill Redmen in the annual Shaughnessy Cup game next Saturday at 2 p.m.
