QB Miller rewrites Concordia football record book

Despite the difficult 22-17 loss to the No. 4-ranked Montreal Carabins on the last day of the regular season, Stinger quarterback Trenton Miller established himself as one of the best players in Concordia history.

Against the second best defence in the country, Miller orchestrated an offence that rolled up 28 first downs and 352 yards of offence.

The Buffalo, N.Y. native who is in his first year of CIS football (third year of eligibility) completed 28 of 46 passes for 286 yards. He threw touchdown passes to Jean-Guy Rimpel and Daniel Skube both in the third quarter. But his favorite target was Jalhani Gilbert-Knorren who caught 10 passes for 100 yards.

The strong performance was just one of many this season. His totals are: 204 completions on 309 attempts (66.0%) for 2384 yards, 20 TDs and eight interceptions.

He set two Concordia school records this season. His 20 touchdowns eclipses the record set by Rob Mackay in 2009 when he threw for 18 TDs. He also broke the record for most completions in a season with 204. The previous record was also held by Mackay with 201 in 2009.

Miller moves into second place in several categories. The record for pass attempts is 328 set by Mackay (2009). Miller has the No. 2 spot with 309. The all-time best completion percentage belongs to Scott Syvret at 66.3 (2005). Miller completed 66.0 per cent of his passes this year.

Finally Miller joins an elite group with 2000 yards passing in a season. Mackay still owns the record with 2739 yards (2009), followed by Miller with 2384 yards, Reid Quest with 2121 yards (2012), Terrance Morsink at 2025 yards (2010) and Dominik Goulet who was the first to reach the mark with exactly 2000 yards in 1996.

This season Miller also carried the ball 40 times for 245 yards and three touchdowns.

One thing to keep in mind when evaluating Miller’s prowess – he didn’t start the first two games of the season and saw limited playing time those two days.

Miller and the Stingers travel to Quebec City to meet the Laval Rouge et Or in the RSEQ semifinals next Saturday afternoon.
