A dominant passing game has helped the Concordia Stingers earn five spots on the RSEQ all-star football team announced by the conference late this afternoon.
Quarterback Trenton Miller leads the list. The MBA student from Buffalo, N.Y. joined the Stingers this summer after two years at Mars Hill University in North Carolina. He quickly adjusted to the Canadian game and was dominating defences by mid-season.
He finished the season on top of all the conference’s statistical categories. His totals are: 204 completions on 309 attempts (66.0%) for 2384 yards, 20 TDs and eight interceptions.
Miller set two Concordia school records this season. His 20 touchdowns eclipses the record set by Rob Mackay in 2009 when he threw for 18 TDs. He also broke the record for most completions in a season with 204. The previous record was also held by Mackay with 201 in 2009.
He also carried the ball 40 times for 245 yards and three majors.
A strong group of receivers, including all-stars Daniel Skube and Yan Lessard, help make Miller’s job easier.
Skube, a veteran slotback, led the conference with 60 catches. That also set a school record for most receptions in a season, passing the previous mark of 52 set in 2009 by Cory Watson. Those catches totaled 692 yards and he had four touchdowns.
Lessard, a rookie wide receiver, led the conference in receiving yards with 728 on 50 catches. He also scored eight touchdowns which ties a school record for most receiving touchdowns in a season. Lessard joins Sylvain Girard who hauled in eight TDs in 1998.
On the other side of the ball, there were also two all-star performances. Third-year defensive tackle Sam Narkaj wreaked havoc on opposing quarterbacks all season. He had six solo tackles and three assists behind the line of scrimmage, including three sacks. He had 23.5 tackles on the season and an interception he returned seven yards.
Finally, fourth-year defensive halfback Mikaël Charland is also on the honor roll. A top-rated CFL prospect, he lived up to expectations finishing the regular season with the second best total tackles in the RSEQ. He had 37 solo tackles and 19 assists for a total of 46.5. He also had three interceptions, two pass breakups and a fumble recovery.
