The Concordia football coaching staff is thrilled to welcome a couple of exceptional football players out of the John Abbott College program to the Stingers family.
All-star wide receiver Nory Volny and cornerback Michael Asibuo will join the Stingers at training camp in August.
“With both these guys in a Stinger uniform, our team is that much better,” said assistant head coach Pat Donovan. “These are step-in players that can make a difference.”
Volny, a resident of Kirkland, Que., played 2013 and 2014 at Campus Notre-Dame-de-Foy and 2015 with the John Abbott Islanders. Last season, he was an RSEQ all-star after making 30 catches for 655 yards (21.8 average) and hauling in five touchdowns.
He checks in at six foot three, 190 pounds and has a 4.56 40-time. He’s respected as a go-to player you can count on when you need a key first down or big play.
“He’s a big, physical athlete,” Donovan said. “He reminds me of Cory Watson (former Stinger with the Edmonton Eskimos). He a special player and he has a very bright future.”
Volny comes out of the prestigious North Shore system where he played midget with the Mustangs and was the team MVP in 2012.
Athletic talent runs in his family. Volny’s brother Carl played four years with Winnipeg Blue Bombers in the CFL and suited up for the Montreal Alouettes last season. He is currently a free agent.
Donovan, who also serves as defensive co-ordinator, is excited about the addition to Asibuo to the Concordia secondary.
“Michael is smart, athletic and very knowledgeable,” said Donovan. “He’s a great cover corner. We feel he is a step-in player who will come to camp in August and compete right away for a starting spot.”
Asibuo, a five-foot-11, 180-pound native of LaSalle, Que., played with the Champlain-Lennoxville Cougars in 2013 and 2014 before joining John Abbott in 2015. In his final year he had 10 tackles, two assists and three breakups in nine games.
“I felt Concordia was the best place for me to grow academically and football wise,” he said. “The Stingers will provide me with the best opportunities to excel and go to the next level.”
The speedy cornerback, who has been clocked at 4.52 in the 40, has been on a couple of championship teams – the 2013 RSEQ champion Champlain Cougars and the 2012 Quebec midget champion LaSalle Warriors.
