Running back Jean-Guy Rimpel carried the football 36 times for 234 yards and three touchdowns to help his team defeat the Bishop’s Gaiters 39-6 and secure a playoff spot on the last day of the RSEQ regular season.
The win gives the Stingers a 4-4 win-loss record and third place in the six-team Quebec football conference. Concordia will travel to Quebec City to face the second-place Laval Rouge et Or in semifinal action next Saturday afternoon.
Rimpel’s performance was one for the record books. Thirty-six carries in a game is the most by any running back in conference history. The previous record was 35 and was shared by Bishop’s Jamall Lee (2008) and Concordia’s Gunner Tatum (2014).
It is also the best single game performance by a Concordia running back in the university history. His 234 yards beats the school record set by Andrew Hamilton who carried for 221 yards in game versus McGill in 2006.
Rimpel also finishes the regular season as the leading rusher in the RSEQ. He carried the ball 112 times for 514 yards and four touchdowns.
He averaged 64.2 yards a game.Concordia rolled up 452 yards of offence and 29 first downs. Most of the damage was done on the ground with the Stingers collecting 312 yards and 20 first downs.
Other scorers for Concordia were wide receiver Justin Julien who caught a 26-yard pass from quarterback Colin Sequeira to open the scoring in the first quarter. Fullback Tanner Green wrapped up the points total with a three-yard run for a major in the last minute of play.
The Concordia defence held Bishop’s to nine first downs and 128 yards of offence.
