Patrick Donovan, the two-time outstanding defensive player in the country, is the Quebec nominee for the BLG awards honoring the top Canadian Interuniversity Sport male and female athletes for the 2006-‘07 season.
Last fall Donovan, a middle linebacker from Laconia, N.H., became only the second player in history to claim back-to-back CIS football defensive-player-of-the-year awards.
The six-foot, 230-pound team captain was named to the first all-Canadian team for a second consecutive season after leading the Quebec conference with six tackles per game.
When Donovan was in the lineup - he missed two games due to injuries - the Stingers were No. 1 in the nation in points and rushing yards allowed.
Donovan, whose amazing accomplishments and strength have attracted NFL attention, hopes to pursue a career in professional football. His options will become clear April 28-29 when the NFL holds its annual draft and signs free agents.
The other male finalists are Trinity Western University volleyball player Josh Howatson of Victoria, University of Windsor football player Daryl Stephenson of London, Ont., and Dalhousie University volleyball player Jeff Weiler of Scarborough, Ont.
The BLG Award winners will be announced at a ceremony on April 30 at the Jack Singer Concert Hall in Calgary, and will be broadcast on TSN on May 20 at 11 a.m.
