Head coach Brad Collinson is pleased to announce Alex Surprenant has agreed to join the Concordia Stingers football staff as the team’s offensive co-ordinator.
“What I like about Alex is that he is a proven winner as both a player and a coach,” said Collinson. “He will bring a sense of ownership and accountability to our offence, and Alex will be a big help recruiting. He knows the football community well.”
Surprenant has been a coach in the St. Jean Géants organization since 2010. He began as a special teams and defensive backs coach and took over as the head coach and offensive co-ordinator in 2013. Under his supervision, the team enjoyed great success winning back-to-back Bol d’Or championships in 2014 and 2015 and successfully moving up from the RSEQ Division 2 conference to Division 1 play in 2016.
“When Brad called me and told me about the Concordia coaching staff, I was excited,” Surprenant said. “These are people I trust and people that know how to win. I’m excited about the challenge of coaching against the best in the province.”
Surprenant’s diverse experience and hard work have helped him develop highly effective offences. In three seasons as the head coach and offensive co-ordinator at the Division 2 level, his teams rolled up a 23-4 regular season record. Each year the Géants had the highest scoring offence in the conference.
In 2016 the team made a seamless transition to the Division 1 conference where the competition was tougher, but St. Jean still fielded very competitive, pass-oriented offences.
The native of Farnham, Que. played for the Géants from 2002 to 2005 and then played defensive back for the Laval Rouge et Or from 2006 to 2009. Surprenant won two Vanier Cup championships and was a RSEQ all-star in his final season.
He graduated from Université Laval with a degree in Business Administration.
