Kean top prospect for CFL draft

Concordia Stingers all-star kicker Warren Kean is on the radar of several teams heading into tomorrow’s CFL Canadian college draft.

His name comes up most often in connection with the Edmonton Eskimos who have worked him out on two occasions this spring. The Toronto Argonauts and Hamilton Tiger-Cats may also be looking at Kean.

News articles currently circulating rate Kean as a first- or second-round pick. Canadian Press reports, “He’s regarded as the best kicker in the draft” and “a genuine first-round prospect.”

The native of Dundas, Ont., has played four seasons with the Stingers. He’s been a QSSF all-star three times and was a CIS all-Canadian in 2005.

Kean made headlines across the country last October when he connected on a record-setting nine field goals in an overtime marathon with the Saint Mary’s Huskies. Concordia won the game 34-31 on Kean’s 33-yard field goal in the sixth overtime period.

Nine field goals in a single game set a Canadian university football record. The previous record of seven field goals was set by the University of Toronto's Lance Chomyc in 1982.

Kean established four new Quebec conference records, including most field goals and most attempts in a single game. He also becomes the Quebec leader for field goals in a season with 20 and attempts in a season with 32.

In 2006, he connected on 20 of 32 field goals with his longest measuring 44 yards. He was also good on 21 of 21 converts.
