For the first time in more than a decade Concordia University will host both the women’s and men’s RSEQ basketball semifinal games.
The elite doubleheader will take place at Concordia Gym on the Loyola campus on Wednesday night.
The Stingers women’s team finished in second place in the Quebec conference with a 10-6 win-loss record. Concordia hosts the third-place McGill Martlets, who also finished with a 10-6 record. The Stingers won three of the four regular season games to earn the advantage in the standings.
The last time the teams met in the post-season was in the RSEQ championship game in 2017. The Martlets won 63-51.
The team that prevails will meet the winner of the Laval Rouge et Or-UQAM Citadins semifinal showdown in the RSEQ championship on Saturday, March 2.
With an 11-5 record in conference play the Concordia men’s basketball team finished in first place for the first time since the 2011-12 season. The top finish guarantees the Stingers home-court advantage throughout the playoffs.
They will host the fourth-place Bishop’s Gaiters who had a 7-9 record this season. Concordia won three of four regular season meetings between the teams. The games were high-scoring affairs with the Stingers averaging 87.5 points a game.
The last time the teams met in the post-season was in the RSEQ semifinals in 2014. The Gaiters won 74-59.
The McGill Redmen and the UQAM Citadins are squaring off in the other semifinal. The RSEQ championship game will be held Saturday, March 2.
