Warren Kean, a fourth-year placekicker with the Concordia Stingers, was the second pick overall in the annual Canadian Football League college draft this afternoon.
The Edmonton Eskimos used their only first-round pick to select Kean. Sean Flemming, 37, was the kicker and punter in Edmonton last season. He’s rumored to be relinquishing the kicking duties opening the door for Kean.
Kean, a native of Dundas, Ont., has played four seasons with the Stingers. He’s been a QSSF all-star three times and was a CIS all-Canadian in 2005.
He made headlines across the country last October when he connected on a record-setting nine field goals in an overtime marathon with the Saint Mary’s Huskies. Concordia won the game 34-31 on Kean’s 33-yard field goal in the sixth overtime period.
Nine field goals in a single game set a Canadian university football record. The previous record of seven field goals was set by the University of Toronto's Lance Chomyc in 1982.
Kean established four new Quebec conference records, including most field goals and most attempts in a single game. He also became the Quebec leader for field goals in a season with 20 and attempts in a season with 32.
In 2006, he connected on 20 of 32 field goals with his longest measuring 44 yards. He was also good on 21 of 21 converts.
Kean joins a long list of Stingers who were selected in the first round of the CFL draft, including wide receiver Sylvain Girard (1999) of the Montreal Alouettes and offensive lineman Rocco Romano (1987) of the Calgary Stampeders who was recently inducted into the CFL Hall of Fame.
