Major award and two all-stars for women's basketball

Three members of the Concordia Stingers women's basketball team were on the honour roll when the RSEQ announced its all-stars and major award winners on Tuesday.

Second-year guard Nelly Owusu of Montreal was recognized for her determination, perseverance and courage and is the RSEQ nominee for the Tracy McLeod Award presented by U Sports in recognition of those same qualities.

As a rookie in 2018-19 Owusu tore her ACL two weeks before the RSEQ campaign started and missed the entire season. She was determined to rehabilitate her knee and be 100 per cent healthy for the 2019-20 season and she succeeded.

Then last October playing in the University of Regina’s tournament, Owusu dislocated her shoulder and the complications kept her out until the new year. Once again she had to dedicate herself to rehabbing an injury while watching her teammates compete.

Owusu finally suited up for her first RSEQ game in January. She played 11 games, averaging 9.6 points, 6.2 rebounds and two steals.

Second-year point guard Myriam Leclerc, a native of St. Roch de Richelieu, Que., was named a first team all-star for the second consecutive year. She played 13 games and averaged 12.8 points and 5.2 rebounds.

Caroline Task is a second team all-star. She was the leading scoring on the Stingers with an average of 14.3 points a game. This is her third RSEQ all-star honour.
