Stingers women's basketball announces new coaching staff

Head coach Tenicha Gittens is pleased to announce her Concordia Stingers women's basketball coaching staff for the 2021-22 season.

The staff consists of six coaches, including three former Stingers, and five of the coaches are working with the program for the first time.

“Everybody brings a lot of value to the team,” Gittens said. “We’ve got experience, we’ve got youth and they are all very committed. I just love that everyone is eager, excited and proactive. We are bouncing all kinds of ideas off each other. It’s energizing.”

Sharon Sandy, a former star guard with the program, will be an assistant coach. She was the Quebec conference rookie of the year in 1990-1991 season and was an all-star in 1992, 1994 and 1995. After her university career, Sandy played professionally in Switzerland. She has extensive coaching experience having worked as an assistant coach and head coach at Dawson College for more than 15 years.

Richelle Grégoire, who was a U Sports all-Canadian with the Stingers in 2017, will assist with the development of the guards and forwards. She was also a two-time league all-star, earning the honours in 2016 and 2017. Grégoire took on coaching roles quickly after her graduation. In 2018, she became the head coach at Polyvalente St-Jérôme with the juvenile girls Division 2 team. She was an assistant with Team Quebec’s U14 girls team in 2019-20 and this year she is part of the Team Quebec U17 staff.

Marilyse Roy-Viau, who will serve as a volunteer assistant coach, is one of the most was highly-decorated players in the history of the Concordia program. She was a RSEQ all-star in each of her five years with the Stingers. She was also named to the Quebec and U Sports all-rookie teams in 2012-13. Roy-Viau will assist with the development of the posts and help with recruiting.

Frédérique Potvin joins the Stingers as an assistant coach. After three years in the NCAA, she finished her career with the McGill Martlets helping them win a national championship in 2016-17. In Cégep, she was a three-time all-star and the 2013 league MVP with the Vanier Cheetahs. Potvin brings a championship pedigree that she will be able to impart to the players. She will assist with the development of the guards and with recruiting. She is currently involved with several basketball programs, serving as head coach with the Jeanne Mance midget boys and as an assistant with both Team Quebec’s U17 and U18 girls’ teams.

Awo Farah, a former U Sports player with the Ottawa Gee-Gees and the University of New Brunswick Reds, will also be an assistant. She has been coaching for a few years and brings a lot of experience and knowledge to the staff. Her experiences coaching high school, developmental and provincial teams in Ontario, out East and in Québec will help with recruiting. She was an assistant coach with Team Quebec’s U17 team in 2018-19 and previously with Ontario Basketball’s U14 and U15 teams. She was also part of the Capital Courts staff in 2017-18.

Finally, Zeniff De Guzman will return for his second season with the Stingers. He will act as both the player development lead and the strength and conditioning coach.
