One week into the Concordia Stingers' football training camp, head coach Brad Collinson is encouraged by what he’s seen.
“There’s a lot of positives,” he said. “There’s some nice surprises with the young guys and we’ve seen a lot of progress with players who have developed over the COVID year.”
All together 99 players reported to camp and that has set up some intense competition.
“On offence we have a lot of talent at receiver and running back,” said Collinson, who is now in his fourth year at the helm. “Recruiting was really good in these areas.”
As well, veteran Vince Alessandrini is back in the fold. The receiver was a late cut from the Montreal Alouettes camp.
“Vince has been excellent,” said Collinson. “He learned a lot by attending a professional camp and he’s showing great leadership.”
A couple of other offensive players also drew praise from the coach. He applauded the work of rookie running backs Dwante Morgan (Vanier College) and Franck Cesar (Campus Notre Dame de Foy).
On defence, two returning players have gained his favour. Defensive back Ahmadou Boubacar and linebacker Mason Paleck are having great camps.
There’s another full week of camp ahead and then a team barbecue. On Aug. 23, the team will change over to a regular season training schedule with afternoon meetings and late day practices.
The Stingers have a bye in the first week of RSEQ conference action. They open the season at home to the Laval Rouge et Or on Sept. 4.
