A 31-19 loss to the No. 1-ranked Montréal Carabins in monsoon-like conditions at Concordia Stadium is not the football game you dream about, but there were exciting highlights and things for the Concordia Stingers to build on.

Led by first-year standout Jaylan Greaves, the receivers gave the die-hard, rain-soaked fans something to cheer about on Saturday. He led all receivers in the game with five receptions for 132 yards, including a 72-yard catch-and-run early in the first quarter that took the Stingers to the Montréal 13-yard line and set up a Concordia touchdown from slotback Jacob Salvail.

In six games, Greaves has 21 receptions for 453 yards and four touchdowns. He averages 21.6 yards a catch which is tops in the RSEQ conference and second in the nation.

Salvail, the veteran captain, has 31 receptions for 485 yards and five TDs. He had four receptions for 30 yards and the TD versus Montréal.

Vince Alessandrini, the fifth-year Montreal Alouettes’ draft pick, also had four catches for 49 yards.

The second Stingers’ touchdown came from backup quarterback Adrien Guay. He scored on a one-yard plunge in the second quarter. He was instrumental in keeping the score close in the first half.

The Carabins led 20-16 at halftime.

Overall, quarterback Olivier Roy and Stingers rolled up 15 first downs and 325 yards of offence. The Carabins countered with 20 first downs and 360 yards of offence.

Defensively, Stinger defensive back Louis-Philippe Leclerc led all tacklers in the game with eight solos and an assist for 8.5 tackles. He also forced a fumble.

The Stingers (3-3) will regroup this week and get ready for the McGill Redbirds (2-4) who will be the opponents at Concordia Stadium on Saturday, Oct. 23 at 2 p.m.
